On April 6, 2014 Former President of Malawi Dr. Joyce Banda said that her government had done so much to improve the lives of mothers and babies. She said that Malawi has improved in reducing the deaths of mothers and new born babies during birth and that Malawi is a model country in the world as other countries are now coming to learn the interventions used to reduce maternal deaths.
On April 6, 2014 Former President of Malawi Dr. Joyce Banda said that her government had done so much to improve the lives of mothers and babies. She said that Malawi has improved in reducing the deaths of mothers and new born babies during birth and that Malawi is a model country in the world as other countries are now coming to learn the interventions used to reduce maternal deaths.Malawi’s maternal mortality rate is at 675 deaths per 100000 births down from 975 deaths per the same births which shows that there is an improvement in maternal deaths. This is good news for mothers, babies and everyone.Malawi has also been on the map for successfully implementing Prevention from Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) which has resulted in children born free from HIV and AIDS. Two thumbs up for that!I should also acknowledge Pitala village in Mchinji which has not recorded a maternal death in more than 10 years. That is at a community level. Having this knowledge, we can safely say this is also achievable at district level as well as at national level if we put to good use the resources which will lead to quality of care, the result being lives of our mothers and babies being saved.Having such success stories Malawi can use the same path to reduce and prevent maternal and newborn deaths thereby creating a maternal deaths free society.Let’s join hands and concentrate on our efforts in saving the lives of mothers and babies in Malawi.Together we can and this is achievable.
