Bauchi State Accountability Mechanism for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health Coalition

The Bauchi State Accountability Mechanism (BaSAM) for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health (MNCH) was established in 2014 with the objective of establishing an accountability mechanism for the implementation of the Global Strategy for Women’s and Children’s Health to ensure that more mothers and babies survive pregnancy and childbirth.
In 2016, BaSAM and other partners achieved a key milestone when Bauchi State allocated 15% of the state budget to health becoming the first state in Nigeria to achieve the Abuja Declaration target.

Priority areas of focus

In the recent past, BaSAM has identified the following priority areas of change: evidence-based planning during budgeting formulation; improved funding for Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health+ Nutrition services during budget execution; and effective implementation of budget for MNCH Services (Antenatal Care, Skilled Birth Attendant, provision of life-saving consumables and other medical equipment) during budget execution in Bauchi State.

Looking into the future, BaSAM is a key stakeholder in Bauchi state’s health system, offer technical guidance as they champion evidence-based decision making on RMNCAH+N services. The coalition advocates to ensure adequate health financing through increased capital releases to the health budget.
