The annual event organized by Nations Publications media house raises essential life-saving resources for mothers and newborns in Mzimba.
This year saw politicians from different political parties, different organizations and all walks of life coming together to raise awareness on the plight that pregnant mothers face at the district hospital.
This year’s Fun Run managed to raise K77 million worth of essential supplies and equipment. Amongst the items donated were hospital beds and mattresses, medical drugs and cash donations.
MamaYe’s gift were two oxygen concentrators and 2,000 rapid test pregnancy kits.The event held under the theme, “Yes We Can Make A Difference” started with a 20 km run. Guest of honour Speaker of the National Assembly Mr. Richard Msowoya -was joined by the former Vice President Rt Hon Khumbo Kachali, Inkosi Mmbelwa V, members of parliament and other citizens of goodwill.
In his remarks, Speaker Richard Msowoya said the initiative has markedly improved the maternal death situation which has haunted the country for decades. He thanked the efforts of the government, development partners, private sectors and the media to help address the situation.
Mzimba district hospital has a capacity of just 26 beds in the maternity ward, while there can be as many as 105 women who need a space.
Making his remarks after receiving the donations, Mzimba District Health Officer, Dr. Lumbani Munthali said the donations will bring smiles on the faces of mothers and babies when they visit the hospitals.
