A young activist, Jeffrey Jesse, stood staring at a banner for sometime. We were in Mama Ye! offices and I let the powerful visual messaging sink in his mind as I stood behind him, before explaining further the extent of the problem. He turned to me with a look of disbelief "47,000 deaths! Is this a global figure or Africa's?"Yes indeed it is a staggering number of stillbirths in Tanzania. Like many citizens of this country many are unaware of this loss as our members of parliament for example openly confess this. Read a blog on World Prematurity Day commemoration in Tanzania. It is tragic that many people are not aware of these big losses. Bigger than the tax aversion scandals my fellow country men and women make noise about daily, because we cannot put a price tag on a life.More tragic is the fact that babies more will continue to die if information is nor shared far and wide, to all cadres of people, through various media in different ways.Enter a Coalition of Stakeholders Advocating Maternal and Newborn Survival - the Government, donors, professional associations, civil society and the media. Read a summary of steps they have taken so far here.Part of their initial advocacy they prepared evidence-based messages and packaged them for different audiences so that more are informed and more can take action to save thousands of Tanzanian babies:
