Financial incentives encourage Government Health Workers performance during deliveries

In the Coast Region of Tanzania there has been an increase in the number of women delivering in a health care facility—a 9% increase to be precise. I could not help noticing that it was also reported that 9% of government health workers said that their motivation to go to work improved.
In the Coast Region of Tanzania there has been an increase in the number of women delivering in a health care facility—a 9% increase to be precise. I could not help noticing that it was also reported that 9% of government health workers said that their motivation to go to work improved.I got these statistics at a Pay for Performance (P4P) dissemination workshop organised by the Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) in Dar es Salaam early December, to give feedback to stakeholders. P4P pilot was introduced in Pwani region by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MoHSW), back in 2011 and has generated a lot of lessons for both the government and stakeholders for the forthcoming rollout of the programme countrywide.Under P4P scheme financial incentives were provided to facilities and individuals based on key achievements. In Tanzania only half of all pregnant women access a health facility for delivery. The proportion receiving skilled care at birth is even lower due to various reasons including poor services at health facilities.  Read this report titled “Why give birth in health facility? Users' and providers' accounts of poor quality of birth care in Tanzania.”In Pwani, an evaluation conducted between August 2011 and November 2013 by IHI, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Chr. Michelsen Institute (CMI) also show that patients reported that health workers were more kind during deliveries and the stock outs for certain items were reduced.P4P is implemented in several low and middle income countries around the world, and in Tanzania it was supported by the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), and financial support from the Government of NorwayPlease click the links below for more information  Pay for Performance Pilot evaluation feedback resourcesWhy give birth in health facility?
