On 23 January Dr Hans of Kamuzu Central Hospital sent an SOS to Mamaye on the critical blood shortage that hit the paediatric ward leading to unnecessary deaths of children. Chinsapo Secondary school came to the rescue. More than 30 students organised themselves and went to Malawi Blood Transfusion Service to donate blood. It was a beautiful moment to see the passion that these students have to save lives. Patuma one of the students told the donor attendant that she decided to donate blood because an anonymous person saved her aunt’s child. That was enough, a lesson learnt, to make her into a responsible citizen who donates blood. The willingness these children had, the understanding of the situation, the morale they had to be part of saving lives of mothers and children made the event worthwhile. Some of them have donated more than 3 times, promising to do donate more as well as convincing others to do the same. The school is planning on establishing a life-saving club and blood donations will be among its core business. I bet this club will be a success because the students showed no energy loss, they showed great enthusiasm, running around taking pictures, chatting, drinking squash and eating biscuits-proving wrong all the myths that they have heard of blood donations. The Patron Mr. Kalima thanked MamaYe for the opportunity, for letting them know about the situation. We registered 38 students as activists, which is a big plus for the Mamaye campaign.Chinsapo secondary school, Mamaye Malawi says thank you!!!
