The White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood Tanzania, join with women and their families around the world in celebrating the success of the global campaign to prevent deaths in pregnancy and childbirth. Today, half as many women are dying in pregnancy or childbirth compared to 20 years ago – a huge achievement. This shows us what can be achieved when we work together towards the same goal.Yet we are still losing far too many women. In Tanzania, 24 women die every day giving birth to the next generation. All too often their babies die too and their families suffer terribly. We can do so much more to make sure our women are safe. HE.President JakayaKikwete has worked tirelessly on preventing these devastating deaths - and every single one of us can do more to look after our women as they bring life into the world. The White Ribbon Alliance both globally and in Tanzania has been campaigning to influence change towards the reduction of mothers and newborn deaths. We can really see a great change in how much maternal health is discussed at global meetings, in our own parliament, media and among citizen. I understand there has been a meeting forAfrican Leaders Summit hosted by President Obama in the United States of America, and there they discussed what more could be done to save women’s lives. With global leadership and the will of the citizens of our country, we can make history and make preventable maternal deaths something of the past.We know that many women die because they give birth at home without a midwife or trained health professional – so we are trying to influence decision makers to make sure health centres, which are close to the majority of women’s homes, are equipped to give the care that women need – especially in emergencies during childbirth. White Ribbon Alliance Tanzania has brought together thousands of organizations and individuals, together with the media and politicians, to focus on key strategies to prevent mothers’ deaths. We have seen historic advances in recent months on this issue, with the government requiring specific budget lines from every district council forfunds to pay specifically for comprehensive emergency obstetric and newborn care. Those world leaders who gathered in the new Millennium, in 2000,set us the challenge of reducing maternal deaths by 3/4 and child deaths by 2/3 before 2015. We now have only 500 days before the deadline of these goals. In Tanzania we will reach the target on child deaths. We must accelerate progress in the last 500 days to do all we can to get closer to the target for women in pregnancy and childbirth. Please join the White Ribbon Alliance, and play your part. Be Accountable so that Mothers and Newborns Can Survive Childbirth.
