Making it Happen – Tanzania Quarterly Report July-September 2015
The Making it Happen programme (MiH) has been working in Kagera and Pwani regions since 2013 to reduce maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity, by increasing and improving skilled birth attendance and emergency obstetric and newborn care. This quarterly report sets out progress made between July 2014 and September 2015.There are five intended outputs for the programme:
- Output 1: Increased health service provider capacity to provide Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (EmONC)
- Output 2: Increased availability of EmONC for mothers and babies
- Output 3: Strengthened accountability for results with increased transparency
- Output 4: Strengthened capacity to sustain improvements in maternal and newborn health service delivery
- Output 5: Evidence generated by programme disseminated in order to inform national, regional and global agenda
Progress between July and September 2015The overall number of health workers trained in emergency obstetric care and newborn care (EOC&NC) was 1062 (106.2% of target), the number of Master trainers trained was 81 (108%) and the number of healthcare workers trained in improving the quality of data collection, aggregation and use was 157 (115.4%).Overall, 80.0% (of 1,004 participants who took the test) improved their scores for knowledge and 99.4% (of 1,005 participants tested) improved their scores for skills between the pre- and post-course tests used in assessing the EOC&NC training. On average, participants improved their knowledge test scores 10.1% and skills test scores by 30.3%.The number of signal functions provided at facilities increased, with more facilities being able to provide the full range of EmONC signal functions. At baseline, only 12 CEmONC facilities were able to provide all signal functions, but at 12 months there were 15, out of 21 CEmONC facilities (25% increase). A marked increase was also found with BEmONC facilities, which increased from one at baseline to six at 12 months (five-fold increase) among 15 BEmONC facilities included in the M&E follow-up.The use and quality of registers increased from 32 to 36, especially with postnatal registers.Making it Happen.
