The Niger State Accountability Mechanism for Maternal and Newborn Child Health develops scorecards to track implementation of the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) in the State. They also produce an evidence brief which highlights performance of service delivery indicators against financial indicators and develop call to actions for policy makers. This scorecard calls on the Government to increase the budget for health and ensure funds are disbursed on time to improve the health of mothers and babies.

Trends based on the Global UNAIDS report 2013 show that HIV prevalence has increased in Sierra Leone between 2001 and 2012. In 2012, there was an estimated 1.5% of the population living with HIV.

In 2001, the government of Sierra Leone signed the Abuja Declaration, which commits them to spending at least 15%of the total government budget on health. This factsheet reviews health financing in Sierra Leone in 2013, showing progress and shortcomings.

It is estimated that 26% of maternal deaths in sub-Saharan Africa were directly related to a lack of blood. In Sierra Leone only 5.7 blood units per 1,000 population are collected annually.
