Building an Africa-led movement for mothers & babies health

The International Maternal and Newborn Health Conference (IMNHC) is taking place in Cape Town between the 8th and 12th May 2023. It marks an important step towards achieving the global goals for maternal and newborn health, and preventing stillbirths by 2030.

This conference provides an opportunity to foster stronger connections within the maternal newborn health community, share best practices, evidence and invest in proven interventions to save lives together.Evidence for Action(E4A)-MamaYe, is an active player within the AlignMNH community. Our team is excited to be part of the conference and contribute to bringing the experience of local advocates to a global stage, which is fundamental to achieving global impact on MNH.

While some progress has been made in the past decade, more needs to be done to attain the Every Newborn Action Plan (ENAP - for prioritization of newborn survival in the SDGs), and the Ending Preventable Maternal Mortality (EPMM) targets. Global efforts must come together to ensure programmes are integrated and accountability initiatives are supported to achieve improved access to safe, effective, and equitable quality of care.

The conference will provide a platform for disseminating available knowledge, best practices, and the most up-to-date quality data to enable countries to drive action. E4A-MamaYe and grassroot coalitions will present on ongoing plans to contribute to creating favourable local conditions that boost progress towards better maternal and newborn health outcomes. Be ready to be part of the Africa-led Collective on Maternal & Newborn Health!

Local advocates leading the way

The Collective is a new movement designed and led by African advocates to champion and shape conversations on Maternal and Newborn Health (MNH). The Collective brings together grassroots advocates under one positive identity that uses evidence-informed advocacy to improve MNH in Africa. Presenting the Collective at the IMNCH conference is a turning point, ensuring that advocacy and technical assistance are driven from the region, with advocates positioned at the forefront of discussions with donors, philanthropists, and governments (national and sub-national).

The work of coalitions in Kenya and Nigeria with support from E4A-MamaYe programme has already bolstered efforts to bring deprioritized policy issues to the forefront of government agendas and contributed to prioritizing actions for the achievement of global targets of ending preventable maternal mortality and the 2030 SDGs. This session provides opportunities for collaboration, learning more about this movement, contributing ideas to set it on a firm foundation and joining as members.

The session will show how the Collective will rely on a well-established name while functioning independently with the opportunity to become a coordinated space for African coalitions to bring together their knowledge and experience. Its distinctive characteristic will be that of bringing together coalitions with different strengths to address the full range of MNCH advocacy needs and involve grassroots coalitions that will be present at IMNCH to join forces.
