LAGOS STATE MPDSR REPORT 2018 - SUMMARY BRIEF
Maternal and Perinatal death contributes to a significant number of deaths in women and children while tracking and reporting these deaths and responses to reduce preventive deaths still remain a challenge in Lagos State. The Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response programme commenced in 2016 and is assisting the Lagos State Ministry of Health and Partners to take actions towards reducing these mortalities.
This document summarises key findings from the first Lagos State Annual Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response (MPDSR) report. Produced by the Lagos Ministry of Health together with the State MPDSR Steering Committee, this is the first report to systematically analyse the number of deaths recorded and reviewed in 2018, their causes and examples of response to findings. It identifies gaps and recommendations to inform planning and decision-making on how to improve the MPDSR process further.
The development of the report followed due process with wide consultations with various stakeholders including a desk review of the MPDSR data. The in-depth and qualitative investigation of the causes and circumstances surrounding Maternal and Perinatal deaths occurring in Health facilities has provided information to respond with actions that will improve health outcomes through the prevention of avoidable deaths
