Today marks the end of the Worlds Breast Feeding Week which was from 1st to 7th August. I must say I have learnt a lot knowing how important it is to breast feed. As a youth myself, we have mixed feelings towards this breastfeeding, if ever we would want to breast feed when we have our beautiful babies. One of the objectives of the this year’s breastfeeding week was to stimulate interest among young people of both genders to see the relevance of breast feeding in today’s changing world.Well for me I have learnt that:According to WHO “About 38% of infants 0 to 6 months old are exclusively breastfed”. I believe we can do better than this.More than 800,000 child lives could be saved every year, if every child was breastfed. To me this is well said.Adults who were breastfed as babies are less likely to be overweight/obeseBreastfeeding reduces the risk of ovarian and breast cancer. Check!!Breastfeeding is one of the most significant ways to improve infant survival rates. Check!!And breastfeeding does burn some calories, about 750 extra calories a day. “The extra weight you put on in pregnancy can be used to produce breast milk and the weight loss can be more noticeable if you breastfeed for longer than three months”. This was said by Dr Marilyn Glenville PhD, one of the UK’s leading nationalists specialising in women’s health. So ladies, check this one please... :-)So if in this short period I have learnt all that and more, I believe all youths out there are capable of understanding how important it is to breastfeed. Yes, Breastfeeding is a "norm" in many countries but it needs to be promoted. All in all, it was a good week, I have enjoyed it.So I will pose a question for you, WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT?
