Lessons from Congo

When someone mentions Congo Brazzaville what image comes to your mind? Ok, do not answer that. How about if someone says that they have a story to tell, again from Congo, what will you be anticipating…? Well, do not answer that either because I want you to focus on the positive side of things. The Mama Ye! way! This piece was forwarded to me by Mama Ye! Country Director Craig Ferla with a note: “not often there is a good news story on maternal mortality, and you wouldn't have imagined it coming from Congo-Brazzaville, so there is a good lesson(s) in there. This is a fascinating article (please read it here) whereby Congo-Brazzaville has reduced maternal mortality by almost 50% in the last five-Years, and could be one of the very few countries to be on track to reach the Millennium Development Goal number 5 on reduction of maternal mortality”. Few reasons have been given: importantlythe increased access to Caesarean-sectionthe fact that >50% of the population are urban and therefore access to health facilities is easiera good referral system even in rural areasand the individual stories are of doctors and midwives who are proud of their service. To put things into context, it known that Tanzania is unlikely to achieve its target for the MDG 5 due to many factors, one of which being that, to many women in rural areas caesarean deliveries are inaccessible. But together and individually we can do something. Join our campaign to save mothers and babies. Act Now!
