The executive governor of Bauchi State, Barrister Mohammed A. Abubakar, launched his five-point health agenda on September 5, 2015, at the banquet hall of the government house in Bauchi.

The launch witnessed the participation of the managers of the health sector, development partners, civil society organisations, traditional and religious leaders including the Emir of Dass who is the co-chair, state social mobilisation committee on routine immunisation, and the media.

While unveiling the health agenda, the Governor also took time to showcase his commitment to the health sector by releasing an outstanding N160 million counterpart fund for the tripartite agreement between the state, Bill & Melinda Gates and Dangote Foundation to revitalise routine immunisation.

The Governor also declared free healthcare service to children under five years of age.

Right at the onset of his speech, the governor acknowledged the technical support given to him in articulating his health agenda by Dr. Aminu Magashi, the MamaYe regional coordinator, and Dr. Sani Malami, the immediate past Health Commissioner.

Here is the Five-point Health Agenda of the Executive Governor of Bauchi State:

  1. Strengthening Primary Health Care including Routine Immunisation and Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn and Child Health services
  2. Access to quality and cost effective essential and life-saving drugs, including consumables and laboratory services
  3. Motivation, retention and retraining of front-line health workers for effective and quality service delivery
  4. Improving funding of health sector through innovative financing mechanisms, accountability and transparency
  5. Demand creation via health education, awareness creation and strategic communication

The activity was concluded with the governor's visit to Urban Maternity, Bauchi, where he inspected the facility and interacted with the staff as well as provided some of the free health commodity packs.

Going by the level of commitments that the governor has shown so far, there is an indication that the journey towards a strong, virile health sector has begun in Bauchi State.
