10 Cool Things MamaYe Sierra Leone Achieved in 2013

10 cool MamaYe successes of 2013. These are YOUR success too. We must continue to build momentum to ensure that MORE of our MOTHERS & BABIES survive childbirth in Sierra Leone.
By MamaYe, we mean all of you scholars, researchers, activists, policy makers, students, the media and YOUTH. These are YOUR success too. We must continue to build momentum to ensure that MORE of our MOTHERS & BABIES survive childbirth in Sierra Leone.
  1. MamaYe Launched with 390+ enthusiastic activists, media, policy makers, students and the public at large at the British Council in Freetown & at the Community Centre in Koinadugu!
  2. MamaYe in collaboration with National Safe Blood Services worked to amplify the importance of BLOOD DONATION in saving the lives of mothers and babies. MamaYe saw the HIGHEST blood donation drive in Koinadugu district!
  3.  MamaYe in collaboration with the Office of the First Lady and other development partners initiated the Maternal Action Network for Survival, a network dedicated to identifying and prioritizing systemic gaps in health care for mothers and babies with the commitment to help address those areas to save more lives. Dr Louise Hulton, Programme Director of Evidence for Action and Coordinator of the Global Action Network, also participated in the meeting, sharing her insights on global updates and encouraging the committee to keep inspired to act.
  4. MamaYe developed media partnerships with a roundtable discussion with editors of all major media outlets in Sierra Leone. MamaYe's country Director Dr. Mohamed Yilla  was featured on the UK’s Guardian, Huffington Post blog on MamaYe  and Dr. Kandeh Yumkella’s article ‘Light Means Life
  5. MamaYe inspired young people to take action!  Miss Afrique Montreal winner Aminata Wurie fundraised to help support make a clinic safe and the GoShop team developed a donation drive to provide toys and food for mothers and babies spending Christmas at PCMH.
  6. MamaYe, its partners and in collaboration with Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MoHS) developed and disseminated Facility Improvement Team (FIT) scorecards
  7. MamaYe in collaboration with UNFPA and MoHS organized a two day advocacy retreat for 33 parliamentarians to discuss the enactment of the Maternal Death Review (MDR) legal framework. The speaker of parliament, Chernor “Cheri Coco” Bah made an open call for the enactment of legal action to address maternal deaths in Sierra Leone
  8. MamaYe in collaboration with the Fambul Initiative Network for Equality (FINE) worked with Okada Riders in Koinadugu district to ensure more male engagement in maternal health
  9. MamaYe billboards were placed across the city and provinces by one of the largest telecommunications network in Sierra Leone Africell.
  10. MamaYe has worked with the MoHS to strengthen central level data systems that will result to better utilization of health facilities. 
 However:MamaYe Sierra Leone’s favorite success moment was inspiring MamaYe intern Samira Sesay and her friend Fatima Bassir who had never donated blood before to take the initiative, go to National Blood Services office in Freetown and donate blood! Remember, small acts can create BIG change.
